Some recent visitors had this to say:
I had a great time at the King Street house. The location in South Berkeley was great and I felt right at home. I enjoyed the amount of outdoors space we had with the courtyard, it was great for entertaining. The room had what I needed for my three month stay.
~~S.G. Upper Studio, Summer 2024

Barry and Sunah were wonderful hosts! I felt very welcomed in Room #2, which is conveniently located right next to the bathroom and has a window with a robust flowering vine right outside, making for excellent birdwatching. Barry takes care of restocking house supplies and makes sure to keep the kitchen tidy. The house is in a lovely neighborhood, as well, full of young families and walking distance from many nearby amenities such as parks, the tool library, BART, bus stops (including the 7 line), and grocery stores. My favorite thing to do in the area was eat brunch on Sundays at the Thai temple, Wat Mongkolratanaram, which is less than a 10 min walk away.
~~N.R. Room Julia II, Summer 2024

I came to Berkeley as a visiting student for 6 months and had a great stay in Julia Street. The area is quiet, Ashby Bart station and Berkeley Bowl are easily approachable by foot. The kitchen was very clean and Barry and Sunah kept everything in good shape, so that I did not have to care about much. The general spirit was very pleasant.
~~M.J. Room Julia II, Fall 2023 through Spring 2024

I spent three months (March to June) in Julia I during a research stay at UC Berkeley. The house is located in a very quiet, entirely residential neighborhood and in walking distance to BART and Berkeley Bowl. I bought a bike to get to campus, because it is a bit too far to walk every day, and although there are buses, the commute by bike is much more convenient and saves time. There are bike boulevards in the entire area and it is absolutely safe. I also recommend getting a bike just to get to some nice coffee shops etc., as they are all located outside the residential area.

The room is spacious and I very much liked the atmosphere with the big windows, it also has a big table, so I was able to get some writing done, and enough space for doing my Yoga in the morning. The kitchen is equipped with the basics (for shared use), so you can also cook some of the wonderful veggies from Berkeley Bowl, and there is a shared dinette, which Barry and Sunah also use for working Ð but we were always able to figure out a schedule that worked for all. I simply recommend to visit Julia St., if you can, to experience it in person and to see if this is a fit. There are also some changes from the website, so ask them about it, for example, they now have a dog (in case you are allergic), and I also recommend asking about the bathroom schedule.

There is also a small patio outside, where I kept my bike, and which you can also use to enjoy some of the Berkeley sun!
~~F.S. Room Julia I, Spring 2024

I spent a semester visiting Berkeley, and the little cabin at Julia is just what I needed! The location is just perfect: direct bus to campus, and right next to Ashby BART & Berkeley Bowl. We shared the kitchen and common space, but Barry took such good care of the house that it was the cleanest kitchen IÕve ever seen. The cabin was just the right size and has everything youÕd need.
~~R.W. Room Julia Cabin, Fall 2023

I had a great summer staying in Sunah's upper studio! The space is private, comfortable, and bright. I often worked and ate on the upper porch, which is a great place to get light and fresh air, and to meet the other lovely tenants on the property. BART, Berkeley Bowl, delicious restaurants, and a walkable, hospitable neighborhood are extremely accessible. I would certainly stay here again for any future extended visits to the Bay!
--P.B. Room King Upper Studio, Spring 2023 through Summer 2023

Living in King Street for the 5 months we spent in Berkely was amazing! Conveniently located next to the Ashby BART station and Berkeley Bowl (easily the best grocery store for fruits and vegetables), everything we needed was there. We could also cycle to the university or jog by the sea which are both just a few miles away. The house was very cozy and the neighborhood quiet, Sunah and Barry are always ready to help and are great hosts! We can only recommend this place. If one of us comes back to Berkeley we'll for sure check if Sunah has an available room. Thanks for everything!
--P.G. and A.M. Room King Upper, Spring 2023 through Summer 2023

My time at King street has been marvelous. I enjoyed my housemates and the landlords, Sunah and Barry, have been incredibly graceful. I really enjoyed the kitchen. Although small, it is well equipped with an amazing stove and it was pure joy to cook in. Very importantly, my time here included the Ashby BART station within walking distance as well as Berkeley Bowl. I have enjoyed privacy at a good price. My time has been great and I regret having to leave an awesome sense of home I achieved here.
--J.R. Room Julia Cabin and King Lower Studio, Spring 2022 through Summer 2023

To whomever is reading this, inquiring about a rental property while you study or work in Berkeley, I highly recommend this living situation. I have lived in the lower flat of King Street for 2 years, and I must say that the experience was wonderful. Firstly the house is very private, has a beautiful courtyard, and there are many friendly graduate students that come and go. My room had an exceptional patio, where I would often sit and read throughout the day (there was an abundance of late morning sun). Of course, the house has all of your basic necessities.

The house is situated in a relaxed part of town that gets little traffic compared to other parts of this bustling city. It is situated on one of Berkeley's bicycle transportation routes, which are very useful for those who desire to bike to and fro. King Street is mostly quiet throughout the day and especially at night, I felt very comfortable and relaxed here.

Typically there are always a mix of graduate students who are new and those who are remaining tenants. This produces a pretty fun vibe of having parties, game nights, and other meetups (we would often go to Berkeley Thai Temple which is ONLY 3 blocks from the house - seriously folks check it out).

Other than that, Sunah is a great landlord that looks out for her tenants. She is very responsive, and I am saddened that I will be leaving King Street. To whomever takes over next, please take good care of this property - it is so special.
--M.C. & K.P. Room King Lower, Spring 2021 through Summer 2023

I lived in Julia Street for almost a year, and my stay was very pleasant. The house is in a great location: a 10 minute bike ride from downtown Berkeley, and very close to Berkeley Bowl and to the 88 and F bus stops. The neighborhood is residential and quiet, perfect for graduate students or visiting scholars. The room and the kitchen already have everything you need, so it is very convenient if you donÕt want to move furniture, appliances, and cookware. Sunah and Barry are great housemates, always friendly and ready to help. I really recommend the place!
--A.C. Room Julia II, Fall 2022, Spring 2023

The Front House on King Street is an incredible place to stay and I recommend this property to anyone, especially grad students, who are moving to the Berkeley area. Moving in was a seamless process and Sunah was the most helpful landlord I have ever had. Not only was the home beautiful and well-maintained but anytime there was a problem (e.g. power outages due to storms), Sunah was always available and quick to help us find a solution. The room was great for working and was entirely furnished, and it was also close to both UC Berkeley bus lines and the best grocery store ever -- Berkeley Bowl! Everyone I interacted with on the property, from my own housemates to residents from other units, was also very friendly. I definitely recommend checking it out if you are a grad student.
--B.K. Room King Front III, Fall 2022, Spring 2023

I spent one wonderful semester in this large and beautiful room in Julia street. It has a large bed, plenty storage space, a big desk and even a fridge. The view from the big window is fabulous. I really enjoy my time sitting in front of the big desk and the window. Usually I take F or 88 bus lines to downtown and campus. There is also a nice market called ÒBerkeley bowlÓ next to the F bus line station. The Ashby subway station is also near to the house. Overall, the location is very convenient. Sunah and Barry are very kind. Every time when I need help they are always there. I highly recommend this place, especially for someone looking for a big window with amazing view!
--Q.H. Room Julia I, Spring 2023

I lived in Julia Street for almost a year, and my stay was very pleasant. The neighborhood is residential and quiet, perfect for graduate students or visiting scholars. Sunah and Barry are great housemates, always friendly and ready to help. I really recommend the place!
--A.C. Room Julia II, Fall 2022 through Spring 2023

I lived in the King Street upper home in its four-bedroom configuration, and I highly recommend it. It is well furnished: a stocked kitchen, a desk in each bedroom, and a small common area with a nice big couch. There is also a nice covered balcony, where we enjoyed many outdoor meals and cups of tea; and a patio shared between Sunah's King Street homes, where we and our neighbors hosted the occasional larger get-together. The neighborhood is very walkable, with BART and Berkeley Bowl close by and UC Berkeley a half-hour walk away. Finally, Sunah is a kind host and clear communicator who made sure the few issues we did have (e.g. a clogged drain) were very promptly resolved. I would rent from Sunah again!
--Z.S. Room King Upper, Fall 2022

My short summer stay in the Julia Cabin was highly enjoyable. The place is in an ideal location, just a short distance from local grocery stores, parks, and Ashby BART station. The cabin itself is comfortable and warm, especially at night. Sunah and Barry are organized, professional, and gracious hosts who were always incredibly welcoming. Overall, my time here at Julia Cabin was a pleasant experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in Berkeley.
--J.O. Room Julia Cabin, Summer 2022

I can recommend this house if you are looking for a large furnished room in Berkeley. The room is very big, has a decent sized fridge, a desk, armoire, chest of drawers, a ceiling fan and big windows. It is located away from the other bedrooms so is very quiet. It used to be the living room in a craftsman house so has lovely built in bookshelves and a mantle. The house is close to the fabulous Berkeley Bowl Market. The house offers all the privacy you want to have. Sunah and Barry left me to myself but when I had questions they were nearly always able to help me quickly. I found them to be very compassionate people. I think this room is ideally suited for grad students with lots of quiet time for studying.
--A.K. Room Julia I, Summer 2022

Sunah and Barry provided us a wonderful home and community for over four years. This was our first home together and it will have a special place in our hearts. They have a lovely garden and the location is perfect for biking to campus, taking BART, or walking to Berkeley Bowl (grocery store) or the South Berkeley farmerÕs market. Nearby Thai Temple on Sundays is the best lunch in the Bay. There is plenty of street parking. They have a talented handyman to promptly take care of service requests. We loved getting to know Sunah and Barry, who are both very kind, considerate and friendly, and are always happy to chat or lend a helping hand - Thank you Sunah and Barry!
--I.B. and B.M. Room Julia Cottage, Fall 2017 through Summer 2022

Julia Street is an amazing place with a price that can't be beat. With convenient access to the F and 88 bus lines, as well as being just a 10 minute walk from Ashby Bart, I never felt like I was too far from the UC Berkeley campus or downtown. At the same time, I was able to enjoy the benefits of living in a quiet neighborhood without all of the hustle and bustle. Sunah and Barry are amazing people, friendly and easy to live with. Even if there are any issues, everything is quickly and clearly communicated via email, and something can always be worked out. I would definitely recommend checking it out!
--D.H. Room Julia II, Fall 2021 through Spring 2022

I have been very fortunate to live in Sunah's home for the past few months and it has been great. I moved to San Francisco as I have been studying at UC Berkeley and needed to find a place to stay. My friends and I contacted Sunah and she was very helpful in showing them around. Regarding the house, it is in perfect condition, it has 2 bathrooms and the rooms are very big with a double bed and a desk to study and work. Regarding the neighborhood, it is very quiet, with families and green areas. The train stop is 2 minutes away (Ashby), there is a supermarket nearby and Berkeley University is 15 minutes away by bus and 30 minutes walking. I would definitely recommend this house as I have enjoyed it very much and will never forget this experience. Thank you Sunah!
--D.C. Room King Upper, Spring 2022

Upper apartment in 2909 King St. was the perfect home to stay in Berkeley while studying in UC Berkeley for the spring semester 2022. Sunah was very nice and kind. The room was perfectly prepared with natural light, table for studying, plenty of space for clothes, big bathroom and good heater for the winter. The kitchen was very nice and full of all necessary stuff for cooking. The laundry room was great. I had a great time with my colleagues there and we are very happy to have met Sunah and her lovely apartment.
--R.C.A. Room King Upper, Spring 2022

The King Front House is a charming, comfortable, and convenient place to call home in Berkeley. It is close to Grove Park, which has a big open field space, tennis courts and basketballs. It is also close to public transportation (both buses and Ashby BART station), so it is super convenient to get around. Sunah is great to work with and gets things done very quickly, whether it is processing the lease or fixing the occasional maintenance issue that arises. I love that it is furnished with everything I need and comes with a big kitchen!
--S.Z. Room King Front, Fall 2021 through Spring 2022

Sunah's apartment is conveniently located near the Berkeley bowl and there was a full size kitchen for cooking. Also, there are buses and the BART which run nearby which make it easy to get to campus, downtown Berkeley, and SF. The rooms also have heaters which were very useful on the colder days in Winter. Overall, I had a great stay and Sunah was a very reasonable and responsive landlord.
--F.K. Room King Upper, Fall 2021

I had a wonderful stay in Sunah's apartment. The apartment had great natural light, and its rooms were well-furnished, spacious, and comfortable. It was also pleasant to work outside, since we were surrounded by a beautiful well-kept garden and the neighborhood was quiet and safe. Furthermore, the apartment was conveniently located a short bike ride away from UC Berkeley, and a 5-minute walk from the BART station and the Berkeley Bowl. Sunah was a fantastic, responsive landlord. She put a lot of love into her rentals, and it clearly showed.
--E.B. Room King Upper, Fall 2021

Staying in the upper 3 bed apartment was the perfect arrangement for my fall semester visiting Berkeley. The convenient location, close to grocery stores, the BART, and the freeway, was especially nice. I really appreciated having such a cozy place to come home to, with a well stocked kitchen and a comfortable bed. And Sunah was a great landlord. Always so responsive (and with such excellent usage!) and kind. I would heartily recommend this flat to anyone. Thanks for a great semester!
--A.J.S. Room King Upper, Fall 2021

Myself and two close friends lived in the upper back unit of King street for 9 months during the pandemic. It perfectly fit the three of us and was everything we needed during quarantine. The unit had lovely windows, with great lighting that looked into the surrounding greenery. The neighborhood was very nice and easily walkable to local parks, grocery stores, and public transportation. Sunah, and the people she worked with to help maintain the unit, were lovely, timely, and effective at taking care of anything we needed. Overall, it was a great place to have called home!
--J.F. Room King Upper, Fall 2020 through Spring 2021

2909 is an excellent place to live. The lower apartment is spacious, clean, and up-to-date. The landlord (Sunah) is friendly and very responsive to every issue we had (there were not many, don't be alarmed!). The property is well-kept, with flowers and trees surrounding an inner courtyard, making it a beautiful place. All amenities are onsite, and it's close to a local market (Berkeley Bowl). This was an excellent place to live, and I'll miss it moving on.
--J.B. Room King Lower III, Fall 2019 through Sum 2021

The first two years of my adventure in Berkeley is spent in Julia. At the time when I didn't know anyone I felt welcoming and warm living in Julia. The house is organized and nicely maintained. The room that I lived in, Julia I, is big and surrounded by many windows. The neighborhood is safe and quiet. It's close to Berkeley Bowl, Ashby BART station and multiple bus stations. Many street parkings are available. Sunah is a great landlady who is responsive and tries to build a close small community among tenants. I highly recommend this place.
--T.X. Room Julia I, Fall 2019 through Spring 2021

I had the pleasure of staying for 2 and a half months at Sunah's place during the 2020 summer. The apartment is well furnished, has all the amenities you would need (in unit laundry, in-building garden/patio, even a large balcony to enjoy the great Berkeley weather and sunsets) and is so quiet and peaceful. It's super convenient being so close to public transportation (Ashby BART), local shops and supermarkets (Berkeley Bowl) at the same time. Sunah has been a great host and I truly recommend her place!
--N.H. Room King Upper I+II, Sum 2020

I stayed in Sunah's apartment in King Street during my six months research stay as a visiting PhD student at UC Berkeley. The place is ideal for students who want to live in a very beautiful, quiet and secure neighborhood (with many flowers, squirrels and hummingbirds). I really loved my beautiful and spacious room! The apartment is very well equipped and super clean. Ashby BART is just a couple of minutes away, and there are several nearby options for bus commuting. There are also some grocery shops just around the corner and Berkeley Bowl is really close. Campus and Downtown Berkeley, and Oakland are not too far, which is perfect.
--V.B. Room King Upper III, Spring 2020

Had an awesome 9 months stay, in a well-maintained residence, perfectly quiet to enjoy the fresh Berkeley air and still so close to the rest of the world for some adventures. Great house, great roommates, great accessibility, all that's desired for a cozy stay in Berkeley.
--M.D. Room King Upper I, Spring 2020

I've had such a lovely six months at King St.
It's clear how much care you put into the property and creating a homey environment for your tenants.
--M.W., Room King Front, Spring 2020

Thank you for being a great host. I had the best time living there. Would love to stay in touch.
Good luck with your adventures and may your heroes slay all evil!
--S.B., Room King Upper II, Fall 2019

I stayed in Room 3 in the Upper house. The room is very pretty and it felt like IÕm staying in a hotel room. ItÕs very spacious and has everything youÕll need. I literally just came with my clothes in a suitcase and started living here. The neighborhood is very quiet and ideal for studying. Grocery shopping gets super convenient as it is very close to Berkeley Bowl. The owner Sunah is a sweetheart and she is very accommodating and always helpful. She showed me around Berkeley when I had just arrived and was new to the place. ThereÕs also a place for your bike if you decide on biking to class. If you decide to take the bus instead, the bus stop is right there, just 2 minutes away. Also, thereÕs laundry inside the apartment. No need to worry about storing those quarters. All in all, I had a really pleasant stay here.
--S.S., Room King Upper III, Fall 2019

I lived at 2909 King St for 5+ years. It is a great house, with big kitchen and good natural light. The apartment is set back from a tree-lined quiet street, very close to BART, library, grocery stores, and UC-Berkeley.
--M.C., Room King Upper IV, Fall 2014 through Fall 2019

Julia is a wonderful place to live and Sunah is the most gracious host. The dwelling is very well-kept and has the kind of flair where every piece of art and decor has a story behind it. The home functions very well so that everyone is able to get their needs met like leaving early in the morning for class/work and the like. More generally, Julia St. is a lovely little neighborhood to live in. The neighbors are friendly and you're sure to see a warm smile on your walk to Ashby BART or the very conveniently located bus stops nearby in the morning. It really is a special place! And I'm lucky to have had the opportunity to spend time there.
--R.C., Room Julia II, Fall 2019

We stayed at the lower apartment at King St. with 3 people from January to June 2019. The apartment was great for our purpose as it offered everything we needed. We worked on our startup in Downtown Berkeley, which is just a 25min walk/5min drive away. The area of the apartment in South Berkeley is very nice, quiet and safe and there is also a BART station (Ashby) just a few blocks away. The kitchen has all appliances we needed and there is also a shared washing machine and dryer in the front house. Sunah was also very responsive every time we had a request. Overall, we really enjoyed staying at this place during our time in Berkeley.
--F.K., L.G., D.T., King Lower, Spring 2019

My year at upper was great. I have met amazing roommates and the upper has a very homey feel to it. Our landlord Sunah was very passionate about curating each room's furniture to the color theme of the room, which I thought was quite nice. It gets really pretty in the spring when the flowers bloom and the neighbour's cat lazily moves in the sun to the best spot for an afternoon nap. I'm moving out to live with my SO and I'd enjoyed my stay at Upper.
--J.J., King Upper II, Fall 2018 through Spring 2019

I had a year rich with experience when I lived in Unit 1/2 on King Street. My room was cozy, my roommates were all engaging and clever conversationalists, and the bathroom was usually kept impeccable. The kitchen and living area is small, but surprisingly open and airy, with large windows and plenty of counter space for two (or even three) people to cook at the same time. The armchairs and ottomans are comfortable (almost too comfortable! I admit to having fallen asleep in one on many occasions). There's plenty of space to host a dinner party for twenty or more. On warm evenings, the balcony is a delightful spot to watch the sky shift colors. If you bike, a handy rack rests beside the house, which sits, conveniently enough, on one of Berkeley's bicycle boulevards. (The neighborhood itself is a sweet spot for graduate students or commuters to SF/Oakland--UC Berkeley is close but not too close, and Ashby BART is a seven-minute walk away. Berkeley Bowl and Walgreens are a ten-minute walk away.) All in all, King Street was a magical place to spend a year.
--V.I., King Upper II, Fall 2017 through Spring 2018

I lived in Upper III while finishing up school at UC Berkeley, and I'm convinced I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The room was incredibly homey, all of my roommates were clean and kind, and I was only a short walk/ride away from campus. When I did want to go into San Francisco, the house was only a 5-minute walk from the Ashby BART station. Sunah is responsive and very understanding, and every aspect of my stay was enjoyable to say the least. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a room in the Berkeley area.
--D.H., King Upper III, Fall 2017 through Spring 2018

The memories I made in my 6 months in Lower I are some that I will keep for the rest of my life. The sun-filled house has a vibrant atmosphere where people from all over the world would stop by and for that moment share stories of the different walks of life they'd had. Every day I would take a short commute to the city for work, knowing I always had my little home in Berkeley waiting for me. I would go back home to play guitar with Soufiane, the eclectic French-Moroccan entrepreneur-academic with an peculiar view of the world, or work on the house garden or paint on the living room canvas with Roxane the exuberant French-German chemist with such immense curiosity that her stories would entertain any. Alongside Sunah and Barry I shared tapas, futurist meetings, boardgames, home-made couscous and many, many stories. Amazing people gravitate towards Sunah's houses and I am grateful to have been able to be a part of it. Would highly recommend for anyone to stay here.
--F.S., King Lower II, Fall 2017 through Spring 2018

I've been staying for a couple of months in room I. It's bright and spacious, it's a warm place to dwell and furnished with taste; it comfortably houses a couple. The flatmates are respectful of one's privacy and of the common spaces, but chatting with them has been a pleasant experience. Sunah is available and efficient, for practical purposes as well as for kindly suggesting things to do in the area. The house is conveniently located: a 10 min walk to Ashby BART and 15 min by bike to UC campus. There is a bike rack in the private courtyard.
--L.B., King Upper I, Spring 2018

Julia Street is a lovely, quiet little neighborhood not too far from downtown but nicely insulated from the business of the city. It's around 15 minutes on foot from Berkeley Bowl and just over 10 minutes walking to Ashby BART station, so it's very conveniently located and there are several nearby options for bus commuting. Room 1 is very spacious, the bed is comfortable, and the house is overall well-equipped in the kitchen and artistically decorated. This was the first place I lived after moving to the Bay Area, and it was a good place to land thanks to its being furnished and so well-located.
--D.L.S., Room Julia I, Fall 2016 through Spring 2017

Very welcoming and warm place to live in. The bed is extremely comfortable, although the room tends to be slightly on the cold and humid side. The flat is great, with a great cooking space and well-equipped kitchen. I have lived with the most amazing flatmates ever! The surrounding area is extremely quiet and peaceful, since itÕs mostly families and schools living there. The neighborhood is very safe, and itÕs all right to walk around at night (even for a girl). The host, Sunah, responds very quickly to any messages, and she is very understanding. Whenever there is something with the place, she also makes sure it is fixed extremely quickly. I highly recommend this place to stay.
--M.P.B., King Upper III, Fall 2015 through Spring 2017

I have been staying in Sunah's apartment for my six month as a visiting student at Berkeley. The accomodation is ideal for students who want to comfortably reach campus by bike, as well as living in a quiet and secure neighbourhood. The flat is very well equipped and in prime condition. One is very well connected living that close to the bart station and grocery stores are well in walkable reach. The accomodation is fantastically taken care of and the very few issues, once reported to Sunah, are fixed within houres! Furthermore Sunah is very friendly in providing useful suggestions in practically any matter. All tennants are hand picked and very easy to live with. Thanks for all of that! :-)
--S.A.P, King Upper Flat, Winter 2016/17

I feel so privileged to have had a change to live in the Julia Cottage for the past year. It was such a warm, lovely space. It has an absolutely amazing kitchen space, which made cooking dinner for friends a lot of fun. The furnishings were cozy and comfortable, and I loved being able to look out into such a beautiful garden space on sunny days! Sunah does a wonderful job to try and connect with her tenants and build a sense of community, making the space really feel like a home (even if the stay was temporary). That was such a treat! On the practical side of things, the house is located a very short, easy walk from BART and was very convenient for commuting to the city. It was just a really great space! If I had not relocated out of the Bay area for work, I would definitely have loved to stay longer!
--K.Y., Julia Cottage, Spring 2016

The King Street upper units are a set of lovely and well-kept rooms in a wonderful location! It is a friendly group of people between the house and back units and I had a great time living there.
--L.R., King Upper II, Fall 2015 through Spring 2016

Our apartment on King Street is amazing. We are walking distance from Berkeley Bowl and Ashby BART station. There is bus F to commute to UC berkeley and biking is also a great option to get around. My room is spacious and cozy, with a nice walk-in closet. The living room and kitchen is big and our friends enjoyed spending time here too. I enjoyed my one year stay here very much and will miss this place. The neighbors are interesting and lovely people, and the neighborhood is nice and peaceful. Sunah is great landlady, and I enjoyed the Thai brunch with her and other tenants very much.
--M.Z., King Lower Flat, Fall 2015 through Spring 2016

I wanted to say thank you for everything--this has been an amazing place to live for the last year and I've really, really enjoyed my time here. I've loved the dinners and sense of micro-community you guys create with the house, even if we're all wandering our own directions much of the time.
--K.Y., Julia Cottage, Fall 2015

Staying for 9 months in Julia St (Room I), I can recommend this place if you are looking for a furnished room in Berkeley. The room is big, has a fridge, a desk and big windows. The house is close to the Ashby BART (10 min walk) and with a bike UC Berkeley can be reached within 15min. Moreover, it is really close to Berkeley bowl market. Moreover, the place offers the amount of privacy you want to have, for instance, to study or meet friends. Sunah and Barry graciously left me to myself for as long as I wanted to, but when I had questions they were nearly always able to help me quickly. Altogether, this made the place a very good home for my stage in the Bay Area and i can recommend it.
--S.C.G., Room Julia I, Fall 2015 through Spring 2016

Really cute garden house in great location in Berkeley. Sunah was a very welcoming and accommodating host. The garden is beautiful and there are great coffeehouses and shops within walking distance.
--J.L., Julia Casita, Fall 2015

I stayed here for an internship in downtown Berkeley during the summer of 2015. Sunah was a highly organized and professional host. Everything was described and documented in detail, and everything matched exactly the way it was described. Along with my room, I got to have my own bathroom, which was a rare find among comparable rooms, and was very convenient for my early rush to work. While the room was compact, it was carefully designed to provide enough space for everything fulfilling all my needs. The location was close enough for daily walking to downtown Berkeley (and UC Berkeley) and yet far enough to be quiet.
--M.A.K., Julia Casita, Fall 2015

I stayed in Julia St (Room I) for 6 months and I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a short-term furnished room in Berkeley. The room is big, has a mini-fridge, a desk and big windows. The kitchen has all you need for cooking and Barry is really helpful making sure everything is well organized. The place is close to the BART (10 min walk) which is really convenient if you need to commute to Oakland or SF. There are also several parks around the area and itÕs really close to Berkeley bowl.
--D.M., Room Julia I, Spring and Summer 2015

-->Sunah is a very nice lady and her apartment is really pretty and tidy, just as shown in the pictures. The apartment is spacious and comfortable, and the neighbourhood is nice and convenient. Sunah has been very friendly and warm with us, and is always there when we needed help or clarifications about anything. Overall, it was a great experience. Thank you for making us feel very welcomed Sunah! It has been a pleasure meeting you and we apologise for always being too busy to hang out. Really appreciate the effort and we had a great stay! (:
--S.C.L., King Lower Flat, Summer 2015

I was so impressed with the place when I arrived, and my initial impression remained sparkling throughout my year on King Street. Sunah always made herself and her home available, and was incredibly responsive to anything that I or the other tenants needed. She clearly has a lot of experience in this arena, and is prepared for just about anything. The location also could not be better, blocks from the train station and the best grocery store in the Bay. The unit is behind two gates so although I never felt unsafe in the area, I felt quite secure. Thanks for everything!
--E.F., Room King Upper III, Summer 2014 through Spring 2015

I really loved my room on King Street, it was big and cosy and the kitchen table was the place to hang out and have cool talks with my two Californian roommates. All in all a super experience!
I've walked from the BART station to home several times at the night time and always felt safe. I also really enjoyed to be near to Oakland, as there are some awesome places to check out there. BART was also so close, which is cool if you go to other places in the Bay Area and SF a lot.
P.S. The area is also super nice to go running! A lot of trees and nature by the sidewalk and pretty houses, there's always something new to see.
--M.S., Room King Lower III, Spring 2015

I spent 9 months in the lower apartment on King. I'd spent the previous summer in Taiwan, and it was so nice to get back and have a bed, kitchen, and interesting roommates already set up and waiting for me. Sunah is really great as a landlady, very responsive to problems, and ensuring that everything living-wise ran smoothly. Although I was often away from Berkeley and could only attend one, I appreciated the gatherings that she set up - it really helped with getting to know immediate neighbors. Thank you!
--A.D., Room King Lower II, Fall 2014 through Spring 2015

I've been staying in the upper flat in King St for nine months and really enjoyed it! The flat is cozy and has both a big kitchen and a nice living room area. Sunah is a great and welcoming landlord. If there's any problem in the house, she takes care of it immediately. The neighborhood is calm, quite, very safe and you can bike to UC Berkeley in no time. In addition, many amenities are in walking distance: one of the best supermarkets in the area (Berkeley Bowl), Walgreens and Ashby BART station, from where you quickly get to San Francisco. I would (and did!) recommend the place to my friends!
--T.O., Room King Upper I, Fall 2014 through Spring 2015

I was very lucky finding this apartment for my stay in Berkeley. The location is very good and a grocery store is nearby; the area is very calm and safe, too. The apartment has a large and bright kitchen and the rooms are very clean. Sunah, the landlord of the apartment, is very caring, very professional and takes care of everything in the house immediately. In summary, if I would need to decide again, I would definitely pick Sunah's apartment another time.
--N.N., Room King Upper II, Fall 2014 through Spring 2015

Great location:
  • Approximately 11 mins walk to Berkeley Bowl for really fresh produce at a good price,
  • About 7 mins walk to Thai temple that serves authentic Thai food for Sunday brunch,
  • Berkeley Public Library branch right next to Thai temple
  • 10 mins by foot from Ashby Bart station to get you to work or into the City.
  • Bike to downtown Berkeley in about 15 mins
Manageable, free street parking on a brightly-lit street if you have a car.
Very well-organized, well-thought-out place with a lovely garden!
Great value for the location, size of the room, amenities, etc.
Glad to have been part of the little house on Julia St!
--W.L.L., Room Julia I, Spring 2013 through Spring 2015

I enjoyed the location, one of the best stores in Berkeley, Berkeley Bowl is close by, with my favorite foods. The Bart station is close, also with the flea market. The room allows privacy, but the landlords are friendly. The room is very small but there is a nice porch area to sit and read. ItÕs also walking distance (about a half hour) to UC Berkeley. Water saving system is very educational for me, very impressive.
--R.A., Julia Casita, Spring 2015

Really enjoyed my short stay at Julia St Casita. The amenities are cozy, the shared spaces always clean and respected. You'll be surrounded by warm and friendly souls in a safe and eclectic neighborhood. Would recommend to anyone staying short term in the Berkeley area as it is centrally located with easy access to all types of transportation. I only wish I had had the chance to stay longer to really enjoy all that the people and area had to offer! Definitely check out the Berkeley Bowl, and flea market to really get a taste of the town. Enjoy!
--A.E., Julia Casita, Spring 2015

My fiance and I lived in the Julia Cottage for 8 months and absolutely loved it! Although quaint it was nicely furnished and had a very warm atmosphere, along with a great backyard which we referred to as our "living room." The location was also great, and we frequently took advantage of our proximity to BART for excursions into the SF or Oakland. Sunah is a great landlord and is very reasonable and easy to work with. She was also super responsive to any needs we had as tenants. Sunah also does a great job to build a sense of community among her tenants, like scheduling monthly dinners and fun events. We relocated at the opportunity of a new job, but otherwise were very content with our accommodation there.
--A.N., Julia Cottage, Spring through Summer 2014

I was lucky to find such a nice apartment in a great location for the summer. Sunah was welcoming and attentive. She goes out of her way to maintain a clean, quiet, comfortable space. The apartment is tastefully furnished and the kitchen includes dishes and cookware. I shared the space with three other welcoming, friendly roommates. The location is ideal as the unit is only a few blocks from the Ashby BART, Berkeley Bowl and Walgreens. The neighborhood is quiet and mostly residential with two public parks close by. If youÕre looking for a furnished single room in Berkeley, I highly recommend this place!
--J.L., Room King Upper IV, Summer 2014

I very much enjoyed my time at King St. The neighborhood is excellent--quaint, family-oriented, and close to Berkeley Bowl, Ashby Bart, and the up and coming shops and dining on Alcatraz Ave. The apartment was furnished and very well maintained by Sunah and Danny, our friendly and fast handy man. I would definitely recommend a stay at the property.
--A.R., Room King Lower II, Fall 2013 through Summer 2014

I stayed in the lower apartment in King Street. It was warm, welcoming, tidy and fully equipped. The rooms were furnished with love and good taste, everything was made to enjoy it. But what made my stay special and recommendable was the full attention we had by our landlady: Whenever there was a problem around the house, such as blocked sinks, broken shower heads missing trashcans, you could bet that Sunah would take care of it. Besides the constant planning and improving and the lots of changes for the better the house has seen during my time here, I always felt that renting out a room is not a question of business, but of human wellbeing. I therefore fully recommend the house and its landlord and hope everyone will have a time as great as I did!
--B.K.R., Room King Lower I, Spring through Summer 2014

I couldn't have asked for a better place to live this summer. Sunah is very attentive and does an excellent job maintaining a comfortable space. I stayed in the Upper unit and found it to be very clean and quiet, with friendly roommates and neighbors to boot! The house is located on a beautiful tree-lined street, close to public transportation and anything else you may need. Highly recommend!
--E.M., Room King Upper IV, Summer 2014

I stayed in the Upper unit for nine months, and found it to be a clean, quiet, well-maintained place to live. Sunah makes sure that if anything does need attention the issue is resolved immediately, and she's very responsive to tenant communication. If you need a furnished place in Berkeley, one of Sunah's units will serve you well as a place to land.
--K.A., Room King Upper II, Fall 2013 through Summer 2014

I stayed in the upper unit on King St for a year. The house is beautifully decorated and carefully maintained, and is also in a very desirable location in South Berkeley. Bus stops, Bart, grocery, pharmacy, parks, and anything you may need are within walking distance, while the house is on a peaceful, tree-lined bicycle boulevard. I absolutely loved my stay there. Sunah is a wonderful landlord, is very welcoming, communicative, and does her best to ensure that her tenants are happy and comfortable with their living situation. I feel that finding Sunah's house on King St was incredibly lucky, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tranquil home environment with a built-in community of neighbors and friends.
--C.M., Room King Upper III, Summer 2013 through Spring 2014

I want to just say thank you for being such a caring and responsible landlord and person! This place really felt like home in the past 9 months and it helped me adjust with the move from WV to CA. I hope all stays well with you. Again, thank you!
--M.H., Room King Upper IV, Fall 2013 through Spring 2014

I stayed at Sunah's Upper House at King st, and it was the perfect home base for my summer. Closely situated to Ashby BART, the public library and Berkeley Bowl; all my needs were met and more! Sunah has created a lovely, clean complex of housing for meeting great people. I had a lot of fun just relaxing at home and the parks nearby. The neighborhood is cosy and safe as well. I will definitely stay again in the future!
--E.Y., Room King Upper IV, Summer 2013

Sunah's place is a perfect place for a long stay. Very well located , the house is clean , quiet and cozy. I enjoyed my time there very much. I love that I felt like home. Tons of natural light and a nice terrace to sit down and enjoy the sunset.
--A.M., Room King Upper IV, Summer 2013

We lived in the Julia cottage for 2 years as a working couple and loved it. Sunah is a fantastic landlord: she is very attentive to tenant needs, flexible about making the space work for its inhabitants, and just an all around nice person. We had plenty of privacy and a great view of the lovely garden. The cottage is a great place to live -- the large closet and ample storage space in the kitchen are quite capacious, and with a couple of IKEA bookshelves, we fit two people and all our belongings, plus the cottage amenities, quite comfortably. The shower has awesome water pressure, which is also nice! Julia is a safe road that is easily accessible by BART or car, and the cottage is about halfway between the two Berkeley Bowl grocery stores -- a huge plus. Parking is easy, and being sandwiched between bicycle boulevards makes getting around extremely easy. Berkeley in general is a great place to live, and Sunah's place is spectacular!
--E.G. and R.P., Julia Cottage, Fall 2011 through Summer 2013

Living in Sunah's Lower King Street apartment was great for me. I was in a transition period and Sunah provided a vey well kept home. She has been an amazing landlord, extremely attentive, prompt, and professional. I recommend her properties highly.
--Z.S., Room King Lower III, Summer 2013

I stayed at King Street in the Lower Flat for two months. Sunah was extremely welcoming, she was willing to show me around Berkeley since I was new to the neighborhood. She was proactive in creating get togethers between neighbors. I was in town for an internship, and studied during evenings. It's a close walk to the Ashby BART station; an easy commute to San Francisco. The apartment was kept neat. A sliding glass door was installed in my room which really opened the room up and created quite a spacious feel, with access to a cute little patio.. It was an incredible combination of privacy and community.
--G.M., Room King Lower II, Summer 2013

My stay at King St. was great. My room was comfortable and I was only a short bike ride away from campus and the Berkeley city center. Sunah was very organized and awesome at solving whichever house-related problems we had. The neighborhood is pretty nice, fairly peaceful and close to both the subway station and the Berkeley bowl. I overall enjoyed my stay very much.
--F.R., Room King Upper II, Fall 2012 through Summer 2013

Barry and Sunah were absolutely wonderful hosts. I spent most of my time needing privacy, most of it to study for the MCAT which took up a lot of my time. They graciously left me to myself for as long as I wanted to, and when I would come out of my cave (a well-furnished, very comfortable cave) they would be there to greet me. I also really enjoyed the fact that they allowed company over, and my friends felt right at home. That made the decision much easier for me.
--A.D., Room Julia I, Spring 2013

I stayed six month in King Street during which I took part in an exchange abroad program at UC Berkeley. I had the best time there. Sunah took great care of the apartment and the well being of her tenants is very important to her. The neighborhood is very nice, quiet and green. Ashby BART station, from which it takes 20 min to get to Downtown San Francisco, is ten minutes away. Campus is fifteen min away by bike. Berkeley Bowl, literally the best grocery store in the whole country, is practically right next door on Adeline Street. I would always stay there again. Thanks for everything.
--C.J., Room King Lower II, Spring 2013

I stayed in room 2 for 4 months at Julia St. while doing an internship in San Francisco and it was a great experience! The neighborhood is quiet, safe and in a great location Ð a short walk to Ashby BART and downtown Berkeley. Sunah and Barry were excellent hosts and clearly care a lot about the well being of their tenants. They did a wonderful job of keeping the house clean and feeling like home. If you're a student looking for a place in South Berkeley this place is a no brainer. Sunah is very professional with the business side of things and if you're lucky you'll get a chance to experience some of Barry's amazing cooking!

Thank you so much for being a great host Sunah!
--G.L., Room Julia II, Spring 2013

I had a lovely school year on King St. The house is in a quaint neighborhood close to a phenomenal grocery store, BART, and bus lines for getting elsewhere. Sunah has built a really great place. The bedrooms and our kitchen/common area are much nicer than many of the apartments you might find closer to campus or in downtown Berkeley. After a long day, it made for the perfect place to unwind. Probably my favorite part about the whole place though is our courtyard. The outdoor space is shared by all the tenants, but really serves as our own little private oasis. It is a wonderful spot to host BBQs and the occasional celebration!
--E.P., Room King Upper IV, Fall 2012 through Spring 2013

Living on King St. was great. Sunah has everything organized to a T and made moving in to a friendly and fully-stocked house as easy and as seamless as possible. I would definitely recommend this house for a clean, friendly, all-inclusive place to rent in Berkeley.
--A.K., Room King Upper III, Fall 2012 through Spring 2013

My stay at King Street was fantastic. Sunah is much more than a landlord, a really fun and friendly person who cares that her tenants get along and discover the bay. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly, and the whole bay area is easy to access with ashby bart right down the road. It's also close to the Berkeley Bowl, which blew my mind having lived in Chicago for the last five years. Ever seen matsutake mushrooms in a grocery store? The house is also set back a bit from the street, I couldn't even hear cars going by. It's going to be hard to re-adjust to Chicago!
--J.S., Room King Lower III, Spring 2013

Staying at Julia St. was a comfortable and nice experience. In terms of location, the house is easily accessible from Ashy BART and only a 5-10 minute bike ride from downtown Berkeley - a nice balance for those like myself who attend classes at UC Berkeley but don't want to be right in the middle of the campus. The awesome organic Berkeley Bowl grocery store is right nearby as well as are tons of little coffee shops for weekend reading. The house itself is very cute and well-maintained - the owners clearly put in a lot of effort in keeping it that way. The room where I lived was very sunny and comfortable, too, with a view of the back garden. Sunah cares about her tenants a lot, and it was fun sharing my daily school experiences and troubles with her. She also took me around the area upon my arrival, so I knew right away where the nicest and most scenic places were to go for a run or a walk. Finally, I liked the clarity and precision with which Sunah handled the business side of the living arrangements - with monthly receipts for all the payments, etc. My experience was very pleasant overall, and I'll definitely miss Berkeley!
--A.S., Room Julia II, Fall 2012

I've greatly enjoyed my time in King Street. The house is lovely, well kept and comfortable. Sunah is a great landlady, very fast to respond to all of our questions and small demands. While I was there, she's improved the lighting in the lounge and installed a new heater when we asked for one. I've had a wonderful time in the house and I duly recommend it to anyone coming to Berkeley, either passing through for a few months or looking to settle down for longer.
--T.B., Room King Lower III, Fall 2012

We loved staying at the front house on King St. It gets plenty of light, has spacious rooms, and has lots of room for storage. Sunah has also furnished everything nicely to the point that one can just move right in. As a landlord, Sunah was very responsive and took care of any issues that arose almost immediately. The neighbourhood is also nice with its proximity to Berkeley Bowl, BART, a park and a number of food/entertainment options nearby.
--F.A. and V.V., King Front House, Fall 2012

I was worried when I decided to move to Berkeley because I didn't know anyone in the area. I need not have bothered because I made some incredible friends at 2909 King St. Sunah puts a lot of effort into choosing compatible roommates and I found that the people I have met at Mil Cuatro made it a wonderful year in Berkeley. Not to mention our house was clean, modern, and cozy...I would come back here in a heartbeat!
--M.W., Room King Upper II, Spring and Fall 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our entire stay at Sunah's house in Berkeley. Specifically.
1. The character of the home is fabulous. Warm cozy colors, hardwood floors, a classic Berkeley craftsman house.
2. The tree lined street really makes a positive difference. Just the right amount of sun filters into the dining room enabling a person to read without needing artificial light.
3. The temperature of the house is perfect. Perhaps influenced by the construction of the house and the trees. We kept a window in the bedrooms open throughout our stay and never felt hot or cold.
4. The new plumbing fixtures, water pressure, up to date appliances including a new stove, microwave, refrig, washer & dryer enable you to carry on with your daily activities without worry about where you are going to prepare a meal or where to wash your clothes. We watched TV from the wireless network on a laptop. I never would have believed how good internet TV could be. I no longer channel surf. The time spent channel surfing was allocated to walking the streets of Berkeley lined with shops and cafes.
5. Location. Everything is easy from the location of the house near Ashby. The harbor is in one direction, UC Berkeley is the opposite direction on Ashby. One left turn on Telegraph dead ends into UC Berkeley at the Sather Gate. Turning the opposite direction on Telegraph takes you to Oakland.
6. Sunah, your host lives in the area, and will guide you to places and activities which will enable you to become connected to the neighborhood. It is a real neighborhood, with real people, and a neighborhood kitty who will great you but not impose upon you.
7. Parking. We always found parking on the street. Sometimes right in front of the house, always within a half block of the house.
8. Safety - You are in a city vs. gated community or a resort. My wife and I sat on the front porch most evenings reflecting on the day. We sometimes talked to those passing by which included mothers pushing infants in a stroller to a local senior citizen. There is a duplex on the same lot as the three bedroom house. You get to know your neighbors, know who belongs, which, in our opinion, added a level of comfort vs being in a house with no connection to the immediate neighbors.
The enclosed back porch of the three bedroom house is a common area shared by the residents of the duplex on the same lot. They use the washer and dryer in this enclosed porch (room). There is also a small bathroom with toilet and shower next to the washer and dryer. This is a huge bonus having access to a second bathroom when two people need to get ready at the same time. During our entire stay there never was any difficulty with sharing the washer and dryer. If

I can add more things later regarding places we ate, shopped, I will. The neighborhood market one bock away on Ashby is stocked with all kinds of unique brands. Whole Foods is 4-5 blocks further just off Ashby.
--P.J., King Front House, Summer 2012

I stayed at the upper apartment at King Street for three months. When something needed to be fixed, it was fixed immediately. The house was well-cared for and was well decorated, though my room was slightly small for living there for an extended period of time with a lot of belongings. My roommates were a lot of fun, very friendly, and we played games and had dinner/breakfast together all the time. Sunah is great at choosing friendly, outgoing, and interesting people to live in the house!
--M.Y., Room King Upper II, Summer 2012

Living in the lower flat was pleasant, peaceful and convenient as a newcomer to Berkeley. The flat is close to the grocery store, BART, and at least 5 bus lines that can take you all over Berkeley, Oakland, and even to San Francisco. Living there without a car was very easy.ÊI was very fortunate to become friends with my housemates over the year I lived there, and we enjoyed cooking and playing games together.ÊThis would also be a great place to stay on a short-term basis, since the basics are all provided for.
--B.T., Room King Lower III, Fall 2011 through Summer 2012

I had a truly wonderful experience here: it was such a relief to find a nice, furnished, and affordable apartment after having taken a brief hiatus from Berkeley; it made the stress of relocating much easier to bear. And the people were amazing! The mix of academics and non-academics was a refreshing change from my mostly grad-student social circle, and it was fun to meet all the international tenants who come to stay for a term or two for school or work. Sunah herself is a very caring landlady, of both the tenants and the property, which was another refreshing change from my previous experiences in Berkeley. This apartment was an ideal set-up for me during the 8 months I was here and I recommend it highly, especially for short-term residents who want to avoid the scene and food at the International House and the dark and dingy apartments for the same price in downtown Berkeley.
--D.C., Room King Lower II, Spring and Summer 2012

I had a very nice time staying at the place in King Street. It was the second time IÕve stayed here, so the place is really great. The rooms are very nice and clean. You will also find everything you need (furniture, towels, sheets, kitchen supplies), which makes life a lot easier when arriving from overseas. The house is located in a very nice street. Everything is close, BART, buses, supermarkets, theaters, bars etc. Sunah cares very much about her tenants, which I really appreciate. When I had a problem in my room she took care of it straight away. Both times I was here I also was very lucky with my housemates. We spend some nice evenings together and I wish I would have had more time to hang out with them. Coming to new place where you do not know anyone can be hard but with these people you will feel very quickly at home.
--J.K., Room King Upper III, Summer 2012

I had a lovely seven week stay at the upper King Street apartment. Sunah made sure that the roommates and I were a good match. The apartment had a secure area downstairs for my bike, the room was spacious and contained everything needed. The board game evenings were especially fun, thats when the roommates from the upper and lower apartment meet. Overall a great place to stay for some weeks.
--B.S., Room King Upper IV, Summer 2012

My stay at room I of Julia street was great! The room is a great size and the house is in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Sunah and Barry are great hosts, they are very attentive to your needs and want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible. They are quite fun as well! I think I will miss having after-dinner beers with Barry and Julia St as a whole. It is a great place to stay!
--M.N., Room Julia I, Spring 2012

I lived in Room I at Julia St. for 5 months. It was really great, the room is big and has everything you need! The house is very clean and nice. Sunah and Barry were always very helpful and friendly, it is really great and helps a lot especially at the beginning. Barry is very funny, friendly and he cooks really great, so if you like cooking, you can definitely learn something from Barry! :) Unfortunately I didn't have much time for cooking, but anyway sometimes we ate together and Barry cooked something for me too. I had great time in Berkeley, thanks a lot for everything!
--E.S., Room Julia I, Fall 2011

Sunah provided a cozy, quiet, clean and very convenient place for me to stay when I really needed a short term sublet. Of all the places I've lived this was one of the nicest. My roommates were great, the neighborhood and location was amazing and Sunah really did her best to respond to every need we had. The place was all set up with furniture and kitchenware when I arrived and I was even able to move in the night I first found the place. I have been really safe and happy at 2909 King St and am sad to go!
--A.T., Room King Lower II, Fall 2011

While I only had a short stay with Sunah, it was a wonderful introduction to Berkeley. Sunah took us all around town and hosted a lot of events for us to get to know each other and the area. The others living in Sunah's apartments were all very friendly and helpful, and I look forward to visiting again!
--M.V., Room King Lower II, Summer 2011

Sunah works hard to create a real community within the circle of her renters. ÊIf you want a place that gives you more than just an impersonal room in an apartment, this is the place for you.
--C.H., Room King Lower III, Summer 2011

My stay in Room II of 1623 Julia Street was wonderful. The neighborhood is quiet and safe. I had a short bike ride to campus with the house conveniently located near the bicycle boulevard. Barry and Sunah were great to live with and very friendly. There is a good sense of community with game nights and cookouts, but also as much privacy as desired.
--J.J., Room Julia II, Spring and Summer 2011

I lived in room I in Julia St for four months and the place was very nice for me. The room is huge with a big bed, a fridge, a desk. There are a lot of light during the day and I appreciated it. The house is near Ashby station (BART) so it's easy and fast to go to downtown. Thank you very much to Sunah and Barry because they made me feel good like I was at home. I spent a good time with them when Barry cooked some plates and when we played games all together. I really improved my English thanks to them and during the first days they took care a lot of me. I had a great summer!
--L.M., Room Julia I, Summer 2011

The apartment and room had just been renovated and were very comfortable. The room mates were great, and Sunah did everything to keep up the Òteam spiritÓ in the house. Being totally new in town (and the US), this was a great way for me to get to know people. The house is also well located, very close to the BART and the Berkeley Bowl, the best grocery store ever. ItÕs also still in walking distance to downtown. Unfortunately I couldnÕt enjoy the new garden yet, but it must be beautiful. It was a great stay!
--E.D.K., Room King Lower III, Spring 2011

I was fortunate to find this little piece of heaven at King Street. My room was sunny and comfortable with beautiful artwork. The house has everything you need to feel at home and is filled with amazing people from all over the world. Sunah and Barry are excellent hosts and game night is a great way to get and stay connected. A very short walk to the BART train station and the world's most amazing Farmer's Market in downtown Berkeley. The library is close by and the pizza at the Cheese Board is the best on the planet. I intend to make it a regular winter destination!
--K.F. Room King Upper IV, Spring 2011

Staying at Sunah's King Street apartment has been great for a number of reasons. First, the location is very convenient - close to the BART station, just blocks away from Berkeley Bowl which is a huge grocery store, close to bus stops for major routes, and walking distance to many of Berkeley's different neighborhoods. Second, Sunah is really responsive to any issues or needs you might have - she'll fix any problem right away. And finally, Sunah tries to create a community atmosphere and chooses people to live here who are very quiet and considerate. I would highly recommend staying here.
--J.T., Room King Lower II, Spring 2011

Living in King Street was a great way to start my Berkeley experience! Sunah is very welcoming, and the neighborhood is nice and conveniently located. The house is cozy and clean, and my room was a nice home for the three months I spent here. Hopefully, when I return to Berkeley, I will find a home here again!
--E.P., Room King Lower I, Spring II 2011

We stayed in the cottage for six months and absolutely loved it. It's nice and cozy, and has all the privacy a young married couple can wish for. But above all, Sunah and Barry are just wonderful hosts. They are friendly, welcoming, and great to talk to over a good meal and a nice glass of wine. We have had many landlords over the years, but it's safe to say that none of them have been as caring and helpful as Sunah. If something breaks, you can rely on her to have it fixed right away. Add to that the great location, and we can't see why anyone wouldn't want to stay there! If we visit Berkeley ever again - and we really hope we will - we're definitely going to contact Sunah first.
--S.F. and R.V.B., Julia Cottage, Fall 2010 through Spring 2011

I loved to live in your house at King Street, even though it was just for one month! Was a nice time and glad I met all of you! Was great to see you again!
--P.J., Room King Lower I, Spring I 2011

We stayed in the King st. house for 6 months in 2011. The house is a cute craftsman style house with several artistic touches. The area surrounding is extremely convenient and walkable/bikeable. It's located right next to the Ashby BART station, the Berkeley Bowl (the best grocery store anywhere) and has several fun events occurring nearby. Our favorite weekend events include the nearby Thai Temple Brunch on Sundays and the weekend swap meet at the Ashby BART. Our dog loved the park near the house, where several other local dog owners took their dogs to meet up daily. Enjoy your stay in Berkeley at Sunah's King Street house!
--P.K., King Front House, Fall 2010 through Spring 2011

I had a really good awesome time at Sunah's place. She has the talent to make everybody feel comfortable and at home. I enjoyed the beautifully and comfortably furnished house and my nice room. The house community was really good. There was always someone who was happy to help. Especially Sunah's straightforwardness made me feel at ease. Game night was a great possibility to meet new people, to have a lot of fun and to feel home after a short time to feel home at once). As well, cooking with and for friends was always a pleasure. I really enjoyed the time and I would not want to miss all the experiences and beautiful moments at King Street.

Sunah has a real knack for creating a community. ÊMy housemates, the tenants at her other properties, and even the crew she hired to work on the houses were all exceptionally friendly. ÊSunah goes out of her way to make sure that everyone is comfortable chatting in spite of widely varying cultures and places of origin, which is wonderful when you're new to the area, as I was. ÊIf you're looking for a supportive, friendly environment that invites you to socialize but also allows you however much quiet space and time you need, you should definitely check out Sunah's apartments.

Before meeting Sunah, Barry and my amazing room on King street, all I wanted was just a place to stay in Berkeley. But to my great surprise, they gave me a warm and cozy place I could call home. Coming from half way across the world, Berkeley was a whole new world to me. From the city tour on my first day to the game nights taking place every two weeks, I am really grateful to Sunah for helping me settle in Berkeley. Sunah's house on King street is located in a safe and friendly neighborhood. And the room I had was not just a room, but rather a piece of artistic work. Privacy or company, you can get it whenever you want. What really astonished me is that Sunah can always find those nice guys to live in her house. All in all, I wouldn't have had such a wonderful experience in the US, if I haven't met Sunah.

We stayed at the King street front house from August to November and had a blast. The three of us were working professionals and we found the place to be very clean and very nicely kept. Any time something needed maintenance (a loose doorknob or something minor) Sunah and her crew would often get to it immediately and have it patched up that day or a few days later. The neighborhood is quiet and perfect for walks or a quick jog. There is a park nearby as well as easy access to groceries the library and public transportation. The neighbors (other people renting from Sunah nearby) were all friendly and respectful and incredibly fun to hang out with. We really enjoyed staying in Berkeley at the King street house.

We really enjoyed our summer at King St., which is truly a gem of a house. It's in perfect condition and has great details - like beautifully finished floors and painted birds in the bathroom. The proximity to BART was key since one of us had an SF commute every day, and being avid cooks, we loved having Berkeley Bowl in the neighborhood. We'll miss this house!

My stay in the cottage was wonderful. When I first saw it I could see that it would make for a very quiet and peaceful home as well as a great place to work. But I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there were many more good reasons to stay there, namely the people. Not only are Sunah and Barry very considerate hosts, but they manage to fill the place up with a collection of truly wonderful house-mates. ( Don't miss game night. It is fun... even if you don't like games! ) And the next door neighbors are super as well.

After staying 10 months, it was difficult to leave. When it was time to go I took a bit of Berkeley with me ( meaning good memories, not Sunah's furnishings! )... and I left a part of myself there. And what part that was is the mystery for you. And if you want to learn more about it, you'll have to go there for a visit... which I highly recommend!

Home, sweet home! I lived in room II for 3 months and I definitely enjoyed living there. It's not only about the very nice and pleasantly furnished rooms, but also about those two enjoyable persons Sunah and Barry. I'm so glad having met them during my stay in Berkeley. ÊThe whole surrounding in their house makes you feel at home from the very first moment. If I come back to Berkeley, I definitely know where I want to stay.

The house lies in a nice neighbourhood next to Ashby BART station, from where you'll be in Downtown S.F. in 20 min. The way to the campus takes you about 5-10 min with a bike and a large grocery store is in walking distance. If there are any doubts about this place, don't Êhestitate to contact me.

I lived in room I (Julia St) for three months and I extremely enjoyed it! The room is huge, very sunny (many windows, most of them facing south) and beautifully furnished. The house is very clean and the kitchen is equipped with everything you might need for some decent cooking. The neighborhood is save and well connected to campus by BART and bus (if you need to get to the north-eastern part of campus (Hearst Ave): choose line 'F' - it takes you directly there). However, best of all are Sunah and Barry: we had a lot of fun playing games, having dinner, or going out to watch a play at Berkeley Playground. They really made me feel at home in their house!

I had a great time at Sunah's and Barry's place. I stayed in room I, which is huge and has light coming in from 3 sides, which is very nice in summer. The whole house is super clean and nicely decorated with little pieces of art everywhere. I discovered new ones every week. The neighborhood is save, quite and is close to Bus, BART and the probably best super market in town. The best part about this place though are Barry and Sunah, two lovely, funny and smart people. It was always a pleasure to hangout and chat with them about different countries, the US, food, alcoholic beverages, life and everything in between. A golden nugget in Berkeley.

I really enjoyed my 6-week stay at Barry's and Sunah's. I had a quiet, comfortable room that was perfect to get my work done. We had a great time together, discussing Belgium, the USA, chocolates, beer, wine, and much more. I will always remember the nice dinners we cooked together and I am grateful that I had such a welcoming home here. Thank you!
--S.F., Room Julia II, Summer 2009

My room was clean and comfortable and had lots of light and was very private. The backyard is beautiful and in the summer there are delicious plums. Sunah and Barry made me feel very welcome. On my first day Sunah was kind enough to pick me up from the BART station and, after I got settled, took me on a tour of the area to help me get oriented to Berkeley. Sunah and Barry were always very helpful when I had a question about the house, or the neighborhood, or the area. Sunah and Barry are great conversationalists, and I really enjoyed chatting with them. I had a great summer.

I had a great stay in the cottage this past spring. Sunah and Barry are wonderful hosts, and the cottage itself is a great space to spend some time. The bedroom is cozy, the kitchen is bright and fun, and the garden outside is a great place to take meals when the sun is shining (and in Berkeley that's fairly often). I wasn't familiar with the Ashby area before my stay, but kept finding more and more great little shops and restaurants... all in all, a great little home in a great little area -- I was sad to leave!

On Julia Street you can find three hidden jewels of Berkeley: Sunah, Barry, and a very nice room where I was lucky to stay for one semester. I was directed to Sunah and Barry's by a friend, who thought the place was so good that I shouldn't even bother looking for anything better. He was right. As soon as you enter the house, you get a warm feeling, you know somebody is thoughtfully taking care of it, infusing it with her personality and experiences, but making sure everybody feels comfortable. This can rarely be found in a house where guests come and go continuously. And at the same time, when you live here you discover that you can have your very own space, and be left alone if you need it. I wrote part of my thesis here, and it was very helpful to have that privacy, and still know that Sunah and Barry would be there to chat, have a beer, or play games, whenever I needed it. I really enjoyed my stay here.

I consider myself exceptionally lucky to have stumbled across the online advertisement for Sunah and BarryÕs Julia Street house; I cannot imagine a nicer place to spend my 3 months in Berkeley. My room was large, bright, quiet, and comfortable, perfect for either relaxing or getting a bit of work done. Being 5 minutes' walk from the BART and only 35 minutes' walk from UC Berkeley, Julia Street couldnÕt be more ideally located. Furthermore, my housemates, both permanent and transitory, were kind, respectful, and remarkably easy to get along with. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.

Looking for a great room in a quiet neighborhood with almost all the amenities (butler unfortunately not included)? Check this out. The room itself is great, plenty of light and a great breeze in the afternoon. The rest of the house is comfortable and character oozes from every room. Landlord has a flair for the artistic and it shows. Backyard has been completely re-done and is fantastic. Spent many an afternoon sitting in the garden reading. Permanent occupants are lively and welcoming. A golden opportunity for anybody looking for a private room in Berkeley.

Several years ago, while looking for a place to live in Berkeley, I had the immense pleasure of stumbling upon the house on Julia Street. My primary concern was that my new home be close to the UC Berkeley campus, but the studio apartment far exceeded my expectations. With a large kitchen, lots of windows and plenty of closet space, it was exactly what I needed and much more. The large yard and friendly neighborhood were added bonuses. Sunah was warm and inviting and made me feel right at home. And Barry always made sure my trash was out and my mail was delivered on time. Both of them were very kind and left me with many fond memories. Thank you for giving me such a lovely place to call home!

During my search for housing in Berkeley, I began to feel as if I had to pick from many equally unappealing and depressing options. The last place I had an appointment to see was Sunah and Barry's place on Julia street. As soon as I walked through the door, I knew it was where I wanted to rent. The house is beautiful. Sunah and Barry are perfect hosts. The house is perfect for getting some work done if you just need to be left alone. On the other hand, it was wonderful that I was regularly invited to the weekly games night, out to eat or to the farmers' market because I moved from out of town and knew no one at first. Also, Sunah and Barry are very experienced with house guests and have made it very easy to live in their house without stepping on anyone's toes. I'll miss living here.
--C.A., Julia I, Fall 2007 through Spring 2008

Coming to Berkeley from half way across the country I had to rent only on the basis of pictures up on the website. After having heard all sorts of horror stories about renting in Berkeley, I was expecting the worst when I showed up fresh off an airplane, bags in hand, at 1623 Julia. That I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. The house is amazing, and Sunah and Barry are the easiest people to get along with. Everything is set up to make life as easy and smooth as possible for everyone involved. The location is hard to beat, Berkeley bowl is a stone's throw away, and the Ashby BART is also just a few blocks. You'd think with the location, the place would be noisy but sitting in your room you'd have to strain to hear anything but birds twittering.

All in all, when (it's not a matter of if) I visit Berkeley next, this is the first place I will be looking up to rent.
